Clean Energy

Land of Sky Regional Council is involved in a number of projects related to clean energy – supporting clean energy businesses and promoting the use of cleaner and renewable energy sources.

EvolveEnergy Partnership

EvolveEnergyP is a 26-county, joint initiative between western North Carolina’s leading public and private sector clean energy stakeholders, dedicated to making western North Carolina a model of economic and environmental success through the promotion and support of clean energy. Advancements in renewable energy, energy efficiency, and clean vehicles strengthen our local economy, protect vital natural resources, and improve the quality of life for all of the region’s communities. See www.evolveenergyp.com for more details.

Clean Vehicles Coalition

The Clean Vehicles Coalition is a Clean Cities program for the five-county area surrounding Asheville including Buncombe, Henderson, Haywood, Madison and Transylvania counties, designated by the US Department of Energy on July 26, 2012. The goals of the program are the reduction of our nation's dependence on foreign sources of petroleum and improvement in our air quality.

Alternative Fuel Implementation Team (AFIT)

AFIT is a two year initiative sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy to enhance implementation of alternative fuel in North Carolina and neighboring states. The purpose of the project is to reduce barriers to more widespread adoption of alternative transportation fuels such as biodiesel, electricity, ethanol, natural gas and propane. AFIT is being led by the North Carolina Solar Center/NC State University, in collaboration with a number of partners, including the Land of Sky Clean Vehicles Coalition.

  • Land of Sky staffs are developing an outreach and education plan for biodiesel and a chapter about biodiesel for the Toolkit.
  • A large conference – the Southeast Alternative Fuels Conference & Expo: Driving the New Economy – will be held Oct. 22-24, 2014 in Raleigh. For more information and to register, go to www.altfuelsconference.org.

Planting the Seeds for a Robust WNC Biofuels Sector

Planting the Seeds is a project that is taking a comprehensive and integrated approach to improving economics across the biofuels value chain and addressing key barriers to industry expansion. The goals of the project are: (1) expanding reliable and competitive feedstocks; (2) co-product development to improve economics across the biodiesel value chain; (3) expanding demand through outreach, education and quality; and (4) ensuring strategic regional coordination. Land of Sky is one of project partners; the project is led by AdvantageWest and funded by the NC Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. Visit Planting the Seeds Biofuels Project for more details.

Clean Energy Development Roadmap for the Southeast

The Clean Energy Development Roadmap is a four-state project led by the NC Sustainable Energy Association and NC State Energy Office, to grow the clean energy industry’s contributions to the tax base, employment, exports, and identify what is needed for the industry to bring existing and new products to market at affordable prices. Land of Sky’s role in this collaborative project is gather and provide information on Western NC’s clean energy business sector and be involved in the development of the NC state-level “roadmap.”
