Volunteer Spotlight

“I like helping people,” says Bob
Noble, volunteer coordinator for the Henderson County
Sheriff’s Department volunteers. “That’s a big thing for
me.”
Bob, a 20-year resident of Henderson
County, has been volunteering with the Sheriff’s Department
since 1991 and has been an RSVP volunteer since 1996. He
routinely puts in between 80 and 100 hours a month and has a
lifetime volunteer record with the department of over 12,000
hours. Bob says he enjoys getting to set his own hours. He
also likes patrolling the local subdivisions. “The people
love it,” Bob says. “I get to stop and talk to citizens. I
pick up a lot of information that way.”
Bob used his law enforcement background
from serving with a police department in Connecticut to
organize the Henderson County Sheriff’s Department
volunteers under the leadership of then Sheriff George
Erwin. “I started with a few friends and neighbors,” says
Bob. There are now over 40 men and women volunteering for
the department.
The Sheriff’s Department volunteers
have taken on two new tasks recently. They now escort
funerals and also give a hand to the City of Hendersonville
by walking patrol downtown.
Bob has been instrumental in helping
organize other similar volunteer groups in Murphy and
Winston Salem, North Carolina. “It’s been a rewarding
experience,” he says.
