Senior Tarheel Legislature
2007/2008 Legislative Priorities
- Appropriate an additional $15,000
in Recurring Funds for the operation of the Senior Tar
Heel Legislature.
- Increase funding for home and community based services
for older adults by increasing the
Home and Community Care Block Grant by $5 million.
- Provide funding to expand Project
C.A.R.E. (Caregiver Alternatives to Running on Empty)
- Increase funding for senior centers by
$634,684 for a total of
$2 million
per year.
- Provide dental care for older
adults with special need and in rural areas.
Purpose
- To provide information and education to Senior
Citizens on the legislative process and matters being
considered by the General Assembly.
- To promote citizen involvement and advocacy
concerning aging issues before the General Assembly.
- To assess the legislative needs of older citizens by
convening a forum modeled after the General Assembly.
Tar Heel Legislators meet three times a year- March, June
and October, usually in Raleigh, to advocate on behalf
of older persons.
They have four officers: Speaker, Speaker Pro Tempore,
Deputy Speaker Pro Tempore, and Secretary.
Charles Dickens, the Delegate from Buncombe County, is
the current Speaker of the Senior Tar Heel Legislature.
All delegates and alternates must be at least 60 years
of age and residents of their respective county.
They are selected by the Land-of-Sky Regional Council
Area Agency on Aging, which has chosen to work in cooperation
with the counties to secure the representatives.
An initial orientation and staff support is provided
by Area Agency on Aging staff.
