Century Club
The Century Club Program was initiated in 1996 to recognize
and honor individuals who are at least 100 years old. Volunteers
in Buncombe, Henderson, Madison and Transylvania Counties
identify centenarians and work with these individuals and
their families to help plan birthday celebrations. The
volunteers invite local elected officials to issue proclamations
honoring the centenarian. They attend all of the events
in their county to deliver gifts donated by local area
businesses and welcome the person into the Century Club.
Volunteer coordinators are Mary Alston and Spike Gram in
Buncombe County Ami Young and Bette Hoffman in Henderson
County, Lib DuVall, in Madison County and Ruth Jones in
Transylvania County.
Land-of-Sky Regional Council sponsors an annual celebration
each May to honor all of these special people. All of the
centenarians, their families and the local elected officials
from the four county area are invited. Food, fellowship
and entertainment are enjoyed by all.
There are 94 centenarians that have been identified in
our region. Several of them still live in their own
homes.
Belk Department Stores and Ingles Markets have contributed
gifts to the centenarians on their birthdays since the
program's inception in 1996.
